Best Practices: Building a home System Center Test environment Part III

Part III (Setting up your Domain Controller)

From Server Manager Select Add roles and features

Click Next

Role-based or feature-based installation –Next

Click Next

Select Active Directory Domain Services

It will automatically prompt you too add the associated required features

Click Next

Click Next

Click Install

Once the installation is complete click Close

Click the Exclamation point and then select Promote this server to a domain controller

Select Add a new forest, and select a Root domain name. (I prefer uniquename.local)

Select a DSRM Password

Click Next (You can ignore the DNS delegation warning since this a home test lab)

Confirm NetBIOS domain name and click Next

Click Next

Click Next

Click Install (You can ignore the warnings)

Your server will restart

Modify the alternate DNS server so that your DC will still have access to the internet.

I typically add: 75.75.75.75 as an alternate DNS server. This points to Comcast for external DNS

Create a new AD account

Launch Active Directory Users and Computers– Create a new User

Click Finish

Since we are making this a single server test install we will simplify security settings by adding this account to Domain Admins

Now on to Part IV Installing and Configuring SQL
