Part III (Setting up your Domain Controller)
From Server Manager Select Add roles and features
Click Next
Role-based or feature-based installation –Next
Click Next
Select Active Directory Domain Services
It will automatically prompt you too add the associated required features
Click Next
Click Next
Click Install
Once the installation is complete click Close
Click the Exclamation point and then select Promote this server to a domain controller
Select Add a new forest, and select a Root domain name. (I prefer uniquename.local)
Select a DSRM Password
Click Next (You can ignore the DNS delegation warning since this a home test lab)
Confirm NetBIOS domain name and click Next
Click Next
Click Next
Click Install (You can ignore the warnings)
Your server will restart
Modify the alternate DNS server so that your DC will still have access to the internet.
I typically add: 75.75.75.75 as an alternate DNS server. This points to Comcast for external DNS
Create a new AD account
Launch Active Directory Users and Computers– Create a new User
Click Finish
Since we are making this a single server test install we will simplify security settings by adding this account to Domain Admins
